Xinhua,December 29, 2017 Adjust font size:

CHICAGO, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Corn will become the official state grain of the midwestern U.S. state of Illinois starting from Jan. 1, 2018.

Meanwhile, sweet corn will become the official state vegetable and popcorn will be the official state snack food of Illinois.

Under legislation of Illinois, the corn family will be the first substance to hold three official state titles in Illinois, Chicago Tribune reported.

According to statistics of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Illinois is the second largest corn producer in the United States, just after the midwestern state of Iowa. It produced 2,255 billion bushels of corn in 2016, accounting for 14.89 percent of U.S. total corn production in the year. Enditem
