BUJUMBURA, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- At least eight passengers were killed and 40 others were injured in a car crash on Sunday evening in southern Bujumbura, capital city of Burundi, police said on Monday.

A passenger bus of the state-owned Common Transport Authority (OTRACO) coming from the southeastern province of Rutana veered off and overturned while it was descending at Kamesa, a neighborhood, said police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye.

Some seven passengers died on the spot and a child died later at the hospital, said Nkurikiye. Six of the injured who were in critical conditions were evacuated to hospitals in Bujumbura.

Early investigation shows that the accident was due to a faulty brake system, according to the spokesman. Enditem
