World Bank to spend more than 100 mln USD on health in Mozambique

Xinhua,December 22, 2017 Adjust font size:

MAPUTO, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank announced in a press release here on Thursday that it will spend 105 million U.S. dollars for the health sector in Mozambique, aimed mainly at the areas of nutrition, reproductive health and maternal and child health.

"The results-based funding targets underserved geographical areas in Mozambique and aims to improve the utilization and quality of health services including, in particular, nutrition and reproductive, maternal and child health," said the release.

The World Bank notes that Mozambique faces troubling challenges in terms of social indicators, ranking 181 in the Human Development Index among 188 countries.

The statement notes that Mozambique is short of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the health chapter, despite some progress.

Funding will be channeled through an instrument called Program for Results, which only releases funds in a phased manner and based on the achievement of pre-agreed targets between the World Bank and the Mozambican government. Enditem
