NANJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Two former wardens of a drug detention center were Wednesday convicted of dumping 20,000 tonnes of waste into a lake in eastern China.
A district court in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, convicted Han Jianlin and Zhang Bin, two former officials at Taihu Compulsory Drug Detention Center, of abusing power and sentenced them to 42 months and 45 months in prison respectively.
Zhang was also convicted of taking bribes and was fined 100,000 yuan (15,151 U.S. dollars).
Between mid-June and early July 2016, the two allowed 20,000 tonnes of construction and household waste to be discharged into Taihu Lake through an opening in the detention center, damaging the ecology of the lake, according to the court. Enditem
