RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's northeastern state of Ceara on Monday declared a state of emergency in 41 towns and cities, including its capital Fortaleza, due to an extreme drought.
The government said that the state is severely affected by water shortage and high temperature which have caused serious problems in water supply.
The Ceara state has formally requested the aid of the National Civil Defense System to tackle the crisis.
Despite efforts of the central and local governments, Brazil's nine states in the northeastern region have been suffering from drought in recent years. Enditem
