CAPE TOWN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are news items in South African major news outlets on Sunday:

-- President Jacob Zuma has proposed that the African National Congress' (ANC's) national elective conference decide on suitable sanctions for members who take the party to court.

-- The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) said on Saturday President Jacob Zuma's announcement of free education is drastic, but long overdue and welcomed by the union.

COSATU Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said this provides the first step toward the envisaged free education for the poor, as articulated by the Freedom Charter. (South African Broadcasting Corporation)

-- President Jacob Zuma used his final address as African National Congress (ANC) leader to hit out at the judiciary, civil society organizations, the media and members of his own parliamentary caucus for the way in which they are holding him and his ministers to account.

Zuma lamented the state the ANC finds itself in, warning that the 105-year-old liberation movement is at a crossroad but put the blame on other forces, telling delegates that he had tried to do his best. (Eyewitness News) Enditem
