BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.80 percent, at 3,266.14 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.01 percent lower at 10,998.12 points. The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.58 percent to close at 1,783.97 points.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Friday. Equity benchmarks remained strong with all sectoral indices trading higher after exit polls indicated BJP would win Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 33,462.97, 216.27 points or 0.65 percent up compared to its previous close at 33,246.70.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Friday moved up 2.70 points, or 0.16 percent to close at 1,717.69 points.

Some 8.34 billion shares worth 52.05 billion baht (about 1.60 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Friday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,753.07 down 5.93 points or 0.34 percent, and the Emas was at 12,588.84 down 11.61 points or 0.09 percent.

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) closed down 0.55 percent or 18.84 points to close at 3,416.94.

A total of 1.46 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.31 billion Singapore dollars (about 969.7 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 209 to 173.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 111.61 points on Friday, up 0.15 points or 0.13 percent against the previous trading session.

Over 46.593 million shares worth some 562.929 billion Vietnamese dong (some 25.1 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Friday, an increase of 21 percent in volume and 12.4 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 318.27 points, or 1.09 percent, to 28,848.11 points on Friday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 28,738.84 and 29,017.66. Turnover totaled 126.5 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 16.19 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Friday as yen's rise against the U.S. dollar pressured exporter issues as investors opted for profits amid concerns over U.S. tax reforms.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 141.23 points, or 0.62 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 22,553.22, marking its lowest closing level since Dec. 7.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Friday.
