UNICEF delivers educational aid to schools in Libya's Sirte

TRIPOLI, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Libya had delivered educational materials to 30 schools in the Libyan city of Sirte, UNICEF said on Thursday.

"Yesterday, UNICEF delivered materials that will enable us to install 30 new classrooms in the schools in Sirte which have been affected by armed conflicts in recent months, helping around 1,000 girls and boys to continue their education in a safe environment," said UNICEF.

The UN body praised support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian aids Operations for the delivery of the materials.

UN Support Mission in Libya started implementing a maintenance program for educational institutions in Sirte damaged by military action between the government's forces and IS affiliates.

The program costs a total of 2 million U.S. dollars, aiming at maintaining 12 schools in the city.

According to the Education Facilities Department of Sirte, 65 schools were damaged in the war, 25 of which require full maintenance.

The IS affiliates in December 2015 were defeated and expelled from Sirte, some 450 km east of the capital Tripoli, by forces allied with the UN-backed government, backed by U.S. air force. Enditem
