DHAKA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh observed the Martyred Intellectuals Day on Thursday to commemorate the intellectuals assassinated at the fag-end of the country's liberation war in 1971.

Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid on Thursday morning paid his tributes to the martyred intellectuals by placing wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals' Mausoleum in Dhaka's Rayerbazar area.

The memorial was covered with floral wreaths placed by thousands of people from all strata of society and hundreds of political, social and cultural organizations.

More than 200 intellectuals including professors, journalists, doctors, artistes, engineers, and writers were dragged out of their homes and killed in Dhaka on the night of Dec. 14 in 1971, two days before Bangladesh won the independence war. Enditem
