5 suspects arrested after Shanghai day care abuse

Xinhua,December 13, 2017 Adjust font size:

SHANGHAI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Five suspects, who have worked at a Shanghai day care center, have been arrested on charges of child abuse, local prosecutors said Wednesday.

The suspects were caught on camera in Ctrip day care center, appearing to abuse young children, Changning district people's procutorate said.

Leading travel agency Ctrip established the center, run by a third-party organization, in 2016 to help employees with childcare for children under three years old, the minimum age for kindergartens.

Video footage showing staff abusing children went viral, leading to an intense public outcry. On Nov. 8, Ctrip reported the abuse to district police. The suspects have been in police custody since then.

The district people's procutorate has dispatched prosecutors specializing in child criminal cases to assist the police in the investigation, promising to safeguard the legal rights of the minors involved. Enditem
