UN chief says Algeria key partner in fight against terrorism

ALGIERS, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- UN General-Secretary Antonio Guterres said Algeria is a key partner in the fight against terrorism, APS news agency reported on Tuesday.

"Algeria is an important partner for the United Nations in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism," wrote Guterres in a message to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that targeted the UN premises in Algiers.

"Ten years ago, terrorists targeted Algiers, leaving dozens of casualties in their wake, including 17 United Nations employees," Guterres said.

He expressed solidarity with the people and the government of Algeria in their efforts to fight terrorism, saying "the United Nations will always be at your side."

The UN chief noted that the UN and its entire staff are increasingly targeted around the world where they support "the most vulnerable populations."

UN offices in Algiers were targeted by a suicide bomb car on Dec. 11, 2007, leaving 40 deaths, including 17 UN staff members.

The al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the attack. Enditem
