BUNGOMA, Kenya, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least 19 people were killed and several others injured in a road accident in Bungoma County in western Kenya, police said Tuesday.

A minibus rammed into a tractor carrying sugarcane and overturned on the Kitale-Kamakuywa road Monday evening.

Several other vehicles were also involved in the accident, police said.

Fourteen people were killed on the spot while five others died of their injuries at a hospital.

About 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the government and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport Safety Authority. Enditem
