TOKYO, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed Tuesday as investors were in a circumspect mood and avoided taking bold positions ahead of a U.S. Federal Reserve policy meeting.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 72.56 points, or 0.32 percent, from Monday to end the day at 22,866.17.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, inched 1.74 points, or 0.10 percent, higher to finish the day at 1,815.08.

Food and precision instrument-linked stocks comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
