Xinhua,December 11, 2017 Adjust font size:

NEW YORK, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Several people were hurt in an explosion in the New York City subway near the Times Square area of Manhattan in early Monday morning.

A suspect in custody is also injured, the New York Police Department said in a tweet.

The New York City Fire Department said a pipe bomb went off at the subway station, injuring the suspect and another three persons on the platform at the height of the morning rush hour, and "all injuries are non-life-threatening."

Police earlier said the male suspect was the only person injured in the incident at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue, site of the Port Authority bus terminal and subway stop. But the fire department later updated to say others had also sustained non-life-threatening injures.

The explosion occurred around 7:30 a.m., triggering a massive emergency response by New York police and fire department. Enditem
