5 killed, 20 injured in bus accident in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua,December 11, 2017 Adjust font size:

NEW DELHI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed and 20 others injured in a road accident in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Monday.

"The accident occurred when a mini bus carrying a marriage party rolled into a deep gorge at Chenani in the state's Udhampur on Sunday night," a police official said.

While five people died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a government hospital where the condition of at least four are said to be critical, he said.

Preliminary probe has revealed that the bus was travelling at high speed and the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident, the official said.

A thorough investigation is under way, he added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. Enditem
