Thousands in Istanbul protest against U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital

ISTANBUL, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- About 10,000 Turks on Friday marched in Istanbul against the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, shouting slogans against the two allies.

The demonstrators flocked to the streets following Friday prayer in the historic Fatih Mosque, waving banners that read "Jerusalem belongs to Muslims" and "Jerusalem is Muslims' red line," and chanting slogans like "Killer Israel get out of Palestine," "Throw a stone for Jerusalem," and "Down with America, down with Israel!"

On social media, many also voiced their anger against the U.S. move under the theme of "Turkey stands up for Jerusalem."

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared Jerusalem as Israel's capital, unveiling his plan to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city, sparking outcries around the world.

The status of Jerusalem is among the core issues related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, as the Palestinians are hoping for an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
