40 teams to vie in international canoe race in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- An international canoe race will be held in Riau province of Indonesia this month, attracting 40 domestic and foreign teams from, a senior government official said on Friday.

The Siak International Serindit boat race is scheduled to be held from Dec. 19 to 21 in Siak district of Riau province, head of the district Syamsuar said.

"As host, we have prepared our own teams for this event," he said in Siak district.

Five teams from overseas and the rest from domestic will compete in the race, said Syamsuar.

The foreign nations sending their participants are Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand and the Philippines, he said.

"They will race in Siak river, hopefully this event can help promote tourism sector in our place. Hopefully more tourists will visit Siak," he was quoted by Tempo Media as saying. Enidtem
