Libyan parliament condemns Trump's decision on Jerusalem

TRIPOLI, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based House of Representatives (parliament) on Thursday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's decision of recognizing Jerusalem as Israeli capital and moving U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"The House of Representatives strongly condemns the announcement of U.S. President Donald Trump regarding recognizing the occupied Jerusalem as capital of the Zionist entity and moving his country's embassy to the Arab Jerusalem, thus violating all international conventions and efforts to resolve the Palestinian issue," the parliament said in a statement.

"The parliament stresses the importance of preserving holy places and keenness not to undermine efforts for calm and peace in the region and the whole world. The parliament also rejects all that damages feelings of Muslims in the world, and (confirms) the historic right that proves that Jerusalem is Arabic," the statement added.

It demanded the UN and the international community to "reject this decision, in respect of the United Nations charters and international laws and norms."

In a speech from the White House on Wednesday, Trump announced the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and ordered to start immediately the process of relocating the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Jerusalem lies at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. Trump's controversial move is expected to enrage the Muslim world, which has already warned of serious consequences. Enditem
