Saleh's killing threatens "explosion" in Yemen's security: AL chief

CAIRO, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned Tuesday that the killing of Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh by Houthi rebels threatens an "explosion in the security situation" in the war-ravaged country.

Condemning Saleh's assassination, Aboul Gheit said in a statement that the incident "reveals to everyone the criminal nature of the militia which constitutes the main reason for the devastation in the country since 2014."

He also called upon the international community to swiftly act to contain the repercussions of the ongoing dangerous conditions in Yemen.

The Houthi militia rejected all the compromises for settling the Yemeni conflict, and led all the endeavors to a deadlock, the AL chief added.

Saleh, his relatives and senior aides were killed on Monday after the clashes erupted between his loyalists and Houthis in the capital Sanaa on Saturday.

Saleh's party said in a statement that the war against Iranian-allied Houthis will continue until the recapture of the capital city. Enditem
