2nd LD Writethru: Israel retaliates fire from Gaza, targets Hamas positions

Xinhua,November 30, 2017 Adjust font size:

JERUSALEM, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Israel targeted Hamas posts in the Gaza Strip late on Thursday noon, shortly after Gaza militants fired mortars at troops near the separation fence.

A military statement said that Israel Defense Forces' tank and aircraft fired at four Hamas positions in the besieged Palestinian enclave.

The shooting came after 13 mortars were fired at an Israeli military position near the northern Gaza Strip, while soldiers were carrying construction works near the fence, according to the statement.

There were no reports of casualties or damage on the Israeli side but the train transportation in southern Israel was temporarily halted for fear of more mortars. There were no immediate reports of casualties also on the Palestinian side.

No group immediately assumed responsibility for the fire but Israel said it holds Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian organization that controls Gaza, accountable for any fire incident.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) sees Hamas a terror organization and holds it responsible for everything that happens in the Gaza Strip," a military spokesperson said in the statement read. Enditem
