2 die in building collapse in western India

NEW DELHI, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- At least two people have been killed and two others injured after a three-storied building collapsed in India's western Gujarat state, police said Thursday.

The incident took place late Wednesday evening at Gunjan in Vapi in Valsad district, some 380 kms from state capital Gandhinagar.

While two bodies have been pulled out of the debris of the house, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital, a police official said.

"The death toll could go up as several people are still feared trapped under the debris of the building. Firefighters are carrying out rescue work," he said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.

Building collapses are common in India. Poor construction standards and dilapidation are often to blame. Enditem
