Portuguese unemployment drops to spring 2008 lows

LISBON, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese unemployment in September fell to its lowest level since April 2008, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced on Wednesday.

Unemployment stood at 8.5 percent in September, which is a 0.1 percentage point revision down of an earlier estimate, and 0.3 percentage points lower than August.

The fall continues a downward trend begun in January 2013, when unemployment peaked at 17.5 percent.

October's rate is expected to hold firm at 8.5 percent.

The unemployed population is estimated to tally 435,900 for October, with 4.711 million people in work.

Unemployment among those 15 to 24 is forecast to climb 1 percentage point to 25.6 percent in October, while it is forecast to fall 0.2 percentage points to 7.1 percent among adults aged 25 to 74. Enditem
