An exhibition entitled "Transcendence" is being held in Beijing to explore abstract concepts through the use of rocks, colors and metal.
This exhibition employs a certain unity that comes from the neat, crisp character of the works exhibited, be it a painting or a sculpture. Works from artists Li Yuanchen, Niu Yuhe, Wang Yijian, Xu Sheng, Zhang Tingqun and Chen Zifeng are on display.
"Artists often search for metaphysical entities that transcend the ordinary reality of life. Some tell you they are striving to understand the unity of space and time, while others say they are driven by some mysterious creative energy. Yet, the paradox is that they explore these highly abstract notions through concrete materials: colors, metal, stone," the curators said.
"The artist is even in a better position than a philosopher to transcend the inanimate surface of matter and give it life again through the exploration of materials," they added.
Two sculptors represented in the exhibition, Xu Sheng and Li Yuanchen, agreed, saying: "Let the material grow."
"Transcendence" is curated by Susan Wang from Onyx Gallery, sponsored by Huang Wine Experience, Artall'l, with Dr. Rasko Radovic as academic advisor. The exhibition will be held from Aug.15 -- Sept. 30 in the 1st Floor of the west side of Building 5, No. 5 South Dongfeng Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing.
