Rainstorm affects 940,000 in S. China

Rainstorms have left two people missing and more than 940,000 affected in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region over the past week.

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, the downpour had caused floods in 36 counties in 11 cities, said the regional civil affairs department. Some 52,500 people were evacuated to safe places.

Between July 23 and 29, the maximum accumulated precipitation recorded was 855 mm in Fangchenggang City.

Due to the storms, 1,657 houses collapsed and 3,700 more were damaged. The heavy rain has caused direct economic losses of 271 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars).

Disaster relief work is under way.
