An International Roundtable Conference on Climate Change with the theme, "Harmony, Cooperation, Development, Responsibility ---- Theory and Practice in Coping with Global Climate Change", has begun here in Beijing. Sponsored by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation and organized by the Confucian Studies Academy of Renmin University, scholars and experts will come together between June 24th and June 26th to present and discuss theories on addressing climate change.
The issue of climate change is ever-present and increasing in urgency. "…In line with its UNESCO Special Consultative Status, the China Soong Chong Ling Foundation is working with well-known think tanks and research institutions at home and abroad concerned about environment and climate change to host a small-sized but high-profile international roundtable conference prior to the 2015 Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COPUNFCC) to be held in Paris."
The conference also sought to facilitate discussion from various sectors, as experts of climate change, philosophy, journalism and law were all in participation, and from varying countries, incorporating experts from the United States, the Netherlands, South Africa, Australia and Russia.
Professor Zhang Liwan of Renmin University encompassed the themes of the conference in defining his "Harmony and Cooperation Theory" as it pertains to solving climate change. Professor Du Xiangwan of the Chinese Academy for Engineering reverberated this same theme, recognizing also all those in attendance when he said that tackling climate change would need "scientific cognition, strategic action and international cooperation."
The convention in Paris will be that much more successful due to the exchange of information here at this conference. And as it was communicated at the program's launch, solving the issue of climate change will be no simple task, but through "promoting international cooperation, encouraging institutional development, advocating for global climate change goals and encouraging support within the private sector", shared responsibility will be further engrained – making change possible.
