3rd LD Writethru: 10 killed, over 170 others feared trapped in landslide in western India

At least 10 people were killed and more than 170 others are feared buried under a landslide, triggered by heavy rains, on a village in the western Indian state of Maharashtra Wednesday, a senior police official said.

"The incident happened in Malin village, some 100 km from the state's Pune town, when the landslide came on 40 houses, trapping underneath it over 180 residents. So far, 10 bodies have been recovered and the death toll may rise later in the evening," he said, on condition of anonymity.

Local TV channels showed footage of rescuers on their way to the village braving rains which have damaged roads, indicating that it may be really difficult for them to reach the spot.

Some reports suggested that an entire hill came down on the village, but it could not be officially confirmed.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the natural calamity, and tweeted that Home Minister Rajnath Singh would visit Pune to take stock of the situation. Endi
