Cote d'Ivoire gov't and UNHCR promise to take care of returning refugees

Xinhua, April 17, 2014 Adjust font size:

Cote d'Ivoire government and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) have agreed to work together to take care of refugees returning to the country, an official source said on Wednesday.

Madam Laeticia Kacou from Cote d'Ivoire's foreign ministry said the government had compiled a list of repatriated refugees who may be in need of support in their returning.

The country is slowly regaining normalcy following the 2010- 2011 post-election violence that had left at least 3,000 people dead and a million others displaced.

Statistics from humanitarian organizations indicated that over 250,000 Cote d'Ivoire nationals fled deadly fighting and took refuge in neighboring countries, especially Ghana and Liberia.

Cote d'Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara has reminded his fellow citizens that the war was over and they needed to return to the country to contribute to post-crisis economic revival. Endi
