The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government expressed serious concern over the 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Japan on Friday and the tsunami that followed, and increased the capacity for the Immigration Department's 24-hour hotline.
The government will join the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office and the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo to provide assistance to Hong Kong residents there, the government said. The Emergency Monitoring and Support Center has been activated to closely monitor the situation's development.
In addition, the Immigration Department has arranged staff to stand by at the Hong Kong airport, and prepared flights to Japan immediately once the Tokyo airport resumes operation.
Hong Kong residents in Japan are urged to pay attention to their safety and follow relevant information closely. Any Hong Kong resident overseas may call the (852)1868 hotline if they need assistance.
